Have a look at the pktrace package (upstream just renamed it:
http://www.cs.uu.nl/people/hanwen/mftrace).
For LilyPond, we had the same problem, and designed our own music
font: the feta font. We use mftrace to convert our metafont fonts to
Type1 (pfa) fonts, needed for postscript and pdf.
