Compatibility with other distribution(s).

It seems like everybody except Debian is linking libgtk with 
libpng.so.3.
Some others like cygwin and solaris seem to link it with libpng12.so.0.
(well, that's what google seems to suggest).

If foo is a commercial program, it is more likely that it is 
linked against libgtk2.0 and png3, if it wants to reach a 
larger market.


I think this was the case, am I correct in thinking that, tagoh ?
