Not a kernel developer myself, but what about this idea?

zwerg uses RR DNS for ip resolution. If it solves to 2 different ips,
but acces the same local filesystem, the expoerted FS would be the same. 

If one machine crashes then the other one, has access to the system, not
timing out... 

Maybe?
