Look at smartsuite (ucsc-smartsuite? whatever the package is called
currently, it got renamed once, apt-cache search is your friend.)
That'll at least let you see if the drive has been logging errors,
assuming it has S.M.A.R.T. support, which might help distinguish
drive problems from cable problems.
