"english" should be British/International English, not American English.
Sorry, I missed putting also the british english line for comparison. It
looks like
english (British English)
or the entry for the Webster wordlist could look like
english (Webster's Second International English wordlist)
regardless of the wordlist itself being named web2.
In this system it is the whole string who have meaning, not just the
first word. So, all that entries can coexist if they are provided by the
appropiate ispell dictionary or wordlist. For instance for wordlists we
could have (together with other possibilities for other languages):
english (American English)
english (British English)
english (Webster's Second International English wordlist)
in the same menu, thus being clear and unambiguous.
In any case, with this system it would be responsability of dictionary
or wordlist package maintainer to put the appropiate entry.
Thanks for your interest,
Cheers,
Agustin
