I wish to add to this. When I see a software package, the first question
I ask myself is "Is it in Debian?". If I see that it is in Debian, then
I will try it out immediately without further question.

Since I am more likely to use it, I am more likely to recommend it to
others. Some of these people may wish to purchase the commercial
version...

If however, the software is not in Debian, the next questions are: Why
not? Can I package it for Debian?

If the license allows for free distribution, I consider it OK to package
it for Debian. If on the other hand, there is some indication that the
authors do not want their software in Debian, I will look for a solution
to my problem elsewhere, simply because deb files are the preferred way
of installing packages on Debian computers.
