 Good, if the upstream to your package cares about portability that is good. 
As
I porter, I don't know if upstream will care about portability, the debian 
maintainer should know.  If someone is porting the package for debian, the bug
goes into the BTS.  However, as a debian maintainer knowing the upstream
maintainer, you can get the patch integrated into the upstream source a lot
easier than some random porter.
