I don't remember seeing a bug report about this.  I don't see any spurious
SIGSEGV's in such cases (I saw them when starting up some version
of emacs after a glibc update), but I would never claim that they can't happen.

A backtrace would have been helpful.

For an unreproducible sigsegv this is the most likely reason.  Typical Hurd
failures look differently.

I wish you luck.  Please consider in your evaluation that VM Ware doesn't
fully support running GNU Mach, and there are spurious bugs when running the
Hurd inside VM Ware.  People report varying degree of success.
