aalib comes with xlibs dependency and rpath ?

I'm a bit disappointed by the output of

$ aalib-config --libs
-L/usr/lib -Wl,-rpath,/usr/lib -laa -lm -L/usr/X11R6/lib -lX11 -lslang

I don't know so much about aalib (just that it's a ascii art library),
so no offense in my question :

Why this depends on xlibs ? Is there a way to use the aa functionality
without this dependency ?

And why the '-Wl,-rpath,/usr/lib' which lead to rpath defined in all
executables build using this library ?
