I'd like to second that. I think I pay reasonably close attention to
what's going on, but the single most helpful thing from where I'm
sitting would be an occasional statement of what the blocking issues
are.

To try to contribute something myself, looking at base, we have:

  apt 127648 critical
  Maintainer: APT Development Team
    Transient status file corruption?

  base-passwd 123345 critical patch
  Maintainer: Wichert Akkerman
Patch available since yesterday, offering a workaround for
    putpwent() not understanding compat entries.

  exim 126124 critical
  Maintainer: Mark Baker
Open relay. Patch available, maintainer acknowledged it 9 January.

  fdutils 96845 106576 111089 121713 serious patch
  Maintainer: Vaidhyanathan G Mayilrangam
Somebody with a devfs system should NMU this. There's been no
maintainer upload since 1999, and five NMUs since then.

  libc6 126441 critical
  Maintainer: Ben Collins
Buffer overflow, see other threads on -devel.

  libnewt-utf8-0 122978 serious
  Maintainer: Enrique Zanardi
Causing whiptail problems, see #124083. My entirely uneducated guess
    is that slang1 and slang1-utf8 aren't binary-compatible so
    libnewt0 and libnewt-utf8-0 can't be either.

  modutils 128862 serious patch
  Maintainer: Wichert Akkerman
SPARC-specific, patch from BenC in the report.

  nano 126689 serious sid
  Maintainer: Jordi Mallach
Dummy bug to keep 1.1 out of woody.

  perl 128999 critical
  Maintainer: Brendan O'Dea
Looks like a potato-only security problem. Should be tagged
    appropriately?

  slapd 112499 grave
  slapd 126898 grave
  Maintainer: Wichert Akkerman
I don't pretend to understand LDAP, so ...

  sysvinit 127635 critical
  Maintainer: Miquel van Smoorenburg
Conflict between laptop support and RAID support.

texinfo 111563 115229 serious patch sid
  Maintainer: Josip Rodin
Problem with texi2pdf, patch in the second report. The sid tag is
    probably bogus.

And in standard:

  abiword 129314 serious patch
  Maintainer: Aaron Lehmann
hppa build problem, maintainer was talking to the submitter about it
    on IRC.

  apache 126706 127323 127605 grave patch
  Maintainer: Matthew Wilcox
    suexec permission problems.
  apache 126743 126827 grave
  Maintainer: Matthew Wilcox
    Disappearing passphrase prompt.

  apmd 112678 123163 serious
  Maintainer: Avery Pennarun
Patch from an alpha porter available since September. NMU?

  armagetron 123131 serious
  Maintainer: Marcelo E. Magallon
The maintainer said the problem was "obvious", but the last
    communication was on 10 December.

  binutils 128529 serious
  Maintainer: Christopher C. Chimelis
  binutils-multiarch 126162 grave
  Maintainer: Christopher C. Chimelis
As usual I imagine the toolchain folks will deal with these.

  boot-floppies 107591 serious
  boot-floppies 120386 serious
  boot-floppies 122142 122750 serious
  boot-floppies 123948 serious
  boot-floppies 128941 serious
  Maintainer: Debian Install System Team
The -boot people should know more ... the other boot-floppies RC
bugs are pending a new release.

  dlint 123637 serious
  Maintainer: Florian Hinzmann
Needs to be moved to non-US, unless crypto-in-main happens and
    dnsutils moves to main instead.

  gdb 127301 serious patch
  Maintainer: Daniel Jacobowitz
hppa support. The maintainer should be sorting it out soon.
  gdb 129311 serious
  Maintainer: Daniel Jacobowitz
Non-free manuals. New upstream point release available fixing it.

  gimp1.2 128979 grave
  Maintainer: Ben Gertzfield
    Crashes enlightenment on exit. Anyone?

  gmc 103102 serious
Maintainer: Michael Bramer & Martin Bialasinski
Metadata upgrade problems. Maintainers haven't had time to work on
gmc recently, so patches would help.

  gnuplot 100612 grave
  Maintainer: Thimo Neubauer
Licence problems. We can't do anything until a new upstream release
is available, as far as I can tell.

  junkbuster 121069 serious
  Maintainer: Paul Haggart
Random process deaths. A workaround is available to make it restart
    better. NMU probably needed.

  lyx 126265 serious
  Maintainer: Jules Bean
Support for s390, apparently a matter of changing the Architecture:
    line.

  mutt 129283 serious
  Maintainer: Marco d'Itri
    gnutls changes, I think.

  pydb 127408 grave
  Maintainer: Gregor Hoffleit
Looks like pydb is python1.5 only, so it probably should be removed
from the python task. Furthermore, it depends on a module which was
removed in 1.5.2. Some Python person needs to port it.

  python-pam 123258 grave
  Maintainer: Gregor Hoffleit
    "Doesn't work at all."

  ssh 127575 grave
  Maintainer: Matthew Vernon
ssh-keygen stuff. Patches probably wouldn't do any harm.

  tetex-base 129165 129168 grave
  Maintainer: teTeX maintainers
File conflict between tetex-base and tetex-bin.

  tetex-bin 69600 serious
  Maintainer: teTeX maintainers
    Postinst modifies a conffile.

  tk8.3-dev 113162 grave
  Maintainer: Mike Markley
Problems affecting r-base, although they seem to have been worked
around. In light of that, would downgrading be appropriate?

I hope that helps.
