Echoing the why not both. Another option (that I sent to an
individual rather thant he list):
Have the messages go to another console (say 6). The default on
console 1 would be pretty [OK] or whatever. If something fails or if
you just want to see the verbose output then switch to console 6 and
watch.
Something that redirects to another console can just as easily
redirect to email, log files, whatever...
