Before Branden Robinson released the phase1 debs, I was using utah-glx
along with XF3.3, and that's what I did.  When I switched to XF4.0,
however, I was forced to retreat to 16 bpp in order to have hardware
acceleration for 3D.  Perhaps the situation has changed without my having
noticed.  Anyway, I won't be able to test that hypothesis until Monday.
