package: debian
version: 2.2

Problem: - see subject.
Details:

I installed from CD but did not create personal account because I am
running a dual-boot machine with a shared 'home' partition.

I logged in as root and mounted the redhat root partition to do a 'tail'
on the password file to see what my userid was. I created the account.
In the same session (as root) I ran Gnotepad+ to try it.

After rebooting between the systems once or twice, I logged in as me
and none of the Gnome applications in the menu run. I installed all
the Gnome games (via simple install) but the list that won't run
includes Gnotepad+ (which I know is there --- see above).

Comment:

I've been waiting for this Debian release for a long time. It is extremely
disappointing to find a problem like this. Gnome runs fine on RedHat.
I've seen people with NO sysadmin experience upgrade Gnome over the network
  and have it run properly.

The only thing that keeps me trying Debian is that I find bugs in RedHat
in the tools I use, which are not fixed from release to release. I don't
find these bugs in Debian. However, I am an extremely experienced linux
user. Gnome is becoming a fundamental part of the system [i.e. linux]
and with the advent of the Gnome foundation users will expect to find it
  installed and working.

I could debug this myself if you used 'rpm' as a package manager. It would
be almost trivial. There seems to be a tremendous emphasis in 'dpkg' on
customization (upstream bug fixing) and overall system stability but it is
just arcane and unusable. The 'apt' is still just a shell and seems to have
no useful functionality other than easing the install.

I could go on and on. I did subscribe to several Debian mailing lists
for most of a year ('98-'99) but have not had time to contribute. I may
have some time in the future.

What is sadly lacking is system integration. For this there needs to be
realistic schedules and plans for the core part of the operating system.

reassign 71448 general
thanks

Hi,

I'm closing this bug report is being closed, as you requested. Note also
that general bugs about Debian should be filed against the pseudo-package
called "general" (NB the above snippet tells the BTS to fix that).
