It sounds like you should complain to upstream about what a mess
their source is. If the things have to be unpacked together to
compile, they should be in the same source tarball, IMHO.

Compiling geda is a bit of a mess too. There's libgeda, symbols,
gschem, gnetlist, gsymcheck, docs, and utils. libgeda has to
be compiled first, then symbols; the other packages need the
first two to compile, so those two have to be installed before
the others are compiled. But they're not intended to be unpacked
into a single directory and built in one run.
