Sounds like you may have turned on support for "devfs".

You might want to turn that off until debian has a package for "devfsd".

Alternatively, if you have "SCO login" enabled, you can go into /dev
and create symlinks from /dev/ide/bus0/unit0/part1 to /dev/hda1 etc...
then exit and continue rebooting.

I can't use it because the PCnet32 driver is completely broken.
(though I have tested it using a pcmcia ethernet)
