Fair enough.  However, I don't tend to audit my packages to check that
the dependencies are still valid: package names don't change often and
I hadn't noticed the announcements on -devel.  Also, when changes like
this happen, they tend to be announced on -devel-announce (as happened
with Perl) and/or the individual maintainers are emailed (ditto).

I presume that you have emailed the remaining maintainers whose
packages still have the unwanted dependencies?  Or would you like me
to do so?
