Hi! Thanks for the answers to my question. I got a solution now. I toggled the setting for the power switch from "soft-off" to "suspend" in the BIOS. Then I "hacked" the apm_bios.c kernel source so that it calls shutdown instead of invoking the suspend mode. This may be a bit "illegal" but it works.
