Re: Bug#24951: man pages unreadable due to bad symlinks

I believe that this bug report is invalid (even though there may
be a bug that caused the symptoms).

I did some testing on my pre-release hamm machine (Debian 2.0 kernel
2.0.35 custom)...

man, version 2.3.10, db 2.3.1, July 12th, 1995 (G.Wilford@ee.surrey.ac.uk)
        debian version 2.3.10-65, (May 15 1998), Fabrizio Polacco
        <fpolacco@debian.org>

from dpkg --status:
        sysutils:  1.3.2
        jdk1.1-runtime: 1.1.5v5-1
        man-db: 2.3.10-65

(I don't have jdk1.1-dev installed)

I have the example symlinks (<command_name>.n> -> <command_name>.gz).
executing "man <command_name> produces normal manpage displays.
I also seem to have at least several of the packages mention and at
the same version/release level as the bug reporter.

I suggest that there is some other problem than bugs in the mentioned
packages. Some misconfiguration (possibly due to a bug) in the
reporters system. I admit that I don't know the internals of the
man system but it appears that there is some sort of 'file type
identification' that determines what filters are needed and is NOT
based upon filename extension (unless it parses the links too).
