The best I can offer at this time is that the GNU filesystem layout
seems intuitively better to me, but that I'm not in a position to
debate it yet. I know that consistent, objective reasons will
surface, but they aren't available to me at this time.

If it seems like a minor issue, and you don't worry about it, then the
best thing to do is just to let us have our way. ;)

Seriously, though... I think that you'll quickly grow to like the new
layout.

I'm sure there is, but I don't know where. Microkernels may be
inherently slower, but programming in C is also ``inherently slower''
than programming in assembly language, and Perl is also ``inherently
slower'' than C. There is more to life than speed.

All the Hurd developers are firmly fixed on the future. We are using
both our intuition and our experience to prevent the Hurd from getting
bogged down by minor details. In short, we are trying hard to Do The
Right Thing, but the technology is currently at a place where our
intuitions are more involved in the process than some observers are
comfortable with.

In a lot of ways, we're `sniffing out' good design, rather than
operating by committee or by waiting for the research data to come in.
Researchers are confirming our position, but we are ahead of them, not
behind them.

I have faith in the Hurd's design, and right now all I can offer you
is vague and subtle hints that it will turn out better than anything
anybody has ever imagined.

If you're looking for proof, then you've come to the wrong person.
Wait five years, and I'll have irrefutable proof: world domination.

I don't mean to offend... just keep in mind that I *am* a GNU
fanatic. ;)
