You probably already know this, and if so, sorry to bring it up again,
but you might consider Gnus.  It handles threaded news and mail with
the same interface, and can do all kinds of clever MIME stuff if you
use "tm".

This would probably be much more flexible (and powerful) in the long
run than hacking up something yourself...
