exmh, new and old

About a month ago, I did something (installed? purged?) that caused exmh
to fail when replying to a message. Specifically, when I invoke the reply
operation, rather than bring up an xterm and execute 'vi', as it used to,
nothing happens at all. The same thing happens if I try to use
exmh-async <anycommand>, including emacs. I can reply to messages using sedit,
but that editor seems so clumsy to me that I just use command-line MH instead.

I'm bringing this to the attention of the debian-devel list rather than
the exmh list, because I sense that the problem is somehow in an
incorrect configuration and/or missing dependency. The latest version
(1.6.9-3) did not seem to cure the problem. (Neither have numerous purging's
and reinstallations.) As a result, an otherwise great MUA has become nearly
useless to me. I would very much appreciate some advice.

Some possibly diagnostic information is attached below.

TIA,
Susan Kleinmann

P.S. Why does the exmh.conf file for exmh_1.6.9-3_all.deb say:
set exmh(version) {version 1.6.7 5/3/96}?
