I like the idea of using a source account ("src") much better than
having each user have their own group. I think the principle of least
astonishment pushes for this method too.
I've been using a source account on my machine for a while now and I
find that it works very nicely with the principle of avoiding using
the root account. I only have to "sudo make install" at infrequent
intervals.
On this note, I find that having a group "man" for manual system
programs (like `man' and `apropos'), making them setgid and group man,
and chowning all of the manual pager directories "root.man" or
"bin.man" is a very safe way to operate. This is also how "sman" (the
system I am extending) works best.
