Firstly I would say that I bow to your wisdom on the issue by default. I also
note that Q3A is primarily a multiplayer game. It seems to me that the question
is one of balancing safety and convenience. That said, I have some questions:

 • is our expectation that the ioquake3 client distributed by Debian will
inter-operate with servers running in the wild, or will there be other
issues preventing this as time goes on (version skew etc.)
 • how common are modded servers, in practice? Are most popular servers
   running mods?
 • how many mods are commonly used? Is it a big set or a small one? Are
any of them distributable by Debian?
 • could some mods be unnecessary (I recall silly sound mods being common
with HL2DM, which merely replaced sounds with e.g. homer simpson saying
"d'oh!" and suchlike, but didn't functionally change the game)
 • are there any other ways of mitigating the risk (running the client
suid to a restricted user, jails, etc.?)
