seeking collaboration to build Debian-based project

Hello Debian community,

My name is Jafet Egill Jafetsson, and I am an independent developer and student from Reykjavík, Iceland, who deeply admires Debian’s philosophy of freedom, cooperation, and community.

I first began installing and exploring Debian 12 (Bookworm) in the year 2024, and since then I have been genuinely astonished by how stable, beautiful, and well-structured Debian is. The system’s design, community, and philosophy have inspired me greatly to learn more and contribute in any way I can.

I would like to introduce a project idea called EirOS — a future Debian-based distribution that I hope to build together with the Debian community and kind contributors who may wish to guide or cooperate.

EirOS is still in its early concept stage — not yet built — but the vision is to create a calm, community-centered distribution that honors Debian’s foundation while offering a clean and accessible experience for everyday users. The name Eir comes from Norse mythology, symbolizing peace and healing, reflecting my wish for this project to represent harmony and collaboration.

I’m not here to fork or diverge from Debian, but to learn from and work with the Debian community — understanding how to properly start, structure, and maintain a derivative the right way. I would be grateful for advice on how to:

begin EirOS while staying true to Debian’s guidelines,

align with the Debian Derivatives team and census, and

eventually contribute improvements or tools back to Debian.

As a small note: I am currently on vacation in Crete, in the area of Aptera, and will return home to Reykjavík on November 1st, 2025. I may reply with some delay during this week, but I will be ready to actively cooperate with the Debian community starting November 3rd, 2025 — perhaps even as one of the first native Icelanders to reach out for such collaboration.

Thank you for keeping Debian such a welcoming and inspiring community. I would be honored to receive your guidance and cooperation in bringing EirOS to life.

Warm regards, Jafet Egill Jafetsson 📧 jaffiulfur@gmail.com
