Changing isolinux.cfg and splash.jpg for a live CD

I'm currently in the process of transitioning Swift Linux from an antiX Linux base to the new Linux Mint Debian Edition base.

I know that I'm specifically asking about LMDE, but I think that the process of creating a live CD is similar for many Debian derivatives.

What's the proper way to change the splash screen and GRUB menu during the remastering process? I've tried replacing the isolinux/splash.jpg and isolinux/isolinux.cfg files. The two problems I encounter when I boot up the ISO file I get are:
1. Instead of my replacement splash screen under the GRUB menu, I end up with a black screen.
2. The GRUB menu no longer highlights the selected entry (boot up the CD, check the CD integrity, memory test, boot up from the local drive, etc.).

I've tried replacing the splash.jpg and isolinux.cfg files at various times. I tried this action during the chroot process. I tried this action immediately before the /remaster directory is unmounted. I tried this action immediately after the /remaster directory is unmounted. But none of these actions could resolve the problem.

Leaving the isolinux/isolinux.cfg file unchanged is NOT an option, because all Mint derivatives must remove the Mint branding. Leaving the "Welcome to Linux Mint" and the Linux Mint options in the initial GRUB menu would be a violation of this rule. I need to replace these references to Linux Mint with references to Swift Linux.
