Yep, agreed. For one thing we've come to use the term "derivative"
quite a lot in Debian culture in the last year (instead of "children
distro"); for another, I concur that nowadays the list deserves to be
more top-level than under "/misc".

I guess it'd be useful for everybody if part of the process could be
automated. Not the selection part (we'll need a judgement call according
to the criteria you propose before adding/remove a derivative from the
website), but the actual publishing/unpublishing part. Would it be
feasible to give an easy way to -www people to "sync" a list of
derivative with their respective content from the census pages?

I vote for removing them, there are plenty of other resources on the web
mentioning the heritage of FOSS distros, we could simply point to them.
