The point is that you don't have to install everything.  You don't have to install packages like units and rig (a couple of my stange favorites).  You can have a thin system out of the box without having to purposefully un-install several hunder packages.  Don't mix customizability and breadth of service to bloat.

Hmm... I think Debian failed.

The first item: "Debian will be sleeker and slimmer.  No more multiple
binaries and manpages."

Debian seems to have hundreds of obscure packages that virtually nobody ever
uses. I suspect
that keeps it from being thin.
