This keeps coming up. wRAR also mentioned it recently. If we gather
consensus about this alternative, I'm happy to implement it. From what I
can tell, all it takes is modifying pybuildd (not buildd) and making it
compute a suitable timestamp to pass to sbuild from the information that
it already has.

This is where I'd like input from the reproducible folks.
