This is a know problem, see

see https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=982591

you have to run

echo 'grub-pc grub-pc/install_devices multiselect /dev/sda' | sudo
debconf-set-selections

before starting the upgrade, provided you're using VirtualBox
