Okay.  So you don't have a problem with the kernel itself, but you have
an unfinished upgrade of the kernel package.  After upgrading the kernel
package, which you obviously did, you need to reboot to use the correct
kernel image.

Debian only provides forward compatibility.  Older modules can be used
on newer kernels, but not the other way around.  So you need to reboot
after this upgrade.
