Your phrasing suggests you are either unaware of or skeptical of
public service providers who run, develop, publish and financially
support free/libre open-source software in this space. In fact,
there are many who pay me and others generous, full-time salaries to
support infrastructure for or otherwise contribute to large, free
software development communities. The "only" direct benefit my
employer gets from me is whatever ways my contributions help keep
quality as high as possible for the free software they use to power
their business. I think it's commendable, and a behavior which
should be encouraged in the industry.

Yes there are definitely times when you're better off running your
own machines, but there are other times when it's more cost
effective and environmentally friendly to not have a server room
full of inefficient or underutilized systems wasting space and
energy. It doesn't strike me as something Debian as a whole would
have an opinion on one way or the other. The freedom to do whatever
you want with your physical hardware can be readily balanced against
the freedom to focus on the tasks for which you're using those
systems while someone else professionally takes care of them. You
can still use Debian and support free software either way, right?
