Re: Availability of Debian official cloud images from debian.org
Hi Zack,
Thanks for your answer.

I'm only asking where to upload!!! :)
I haven't (yet?) met anyone who would oppose to this idea.
Your reply shows that I haven't asked the correct questions in my
original message. Probably that's because I'm not sure where to
start myself.

I'm not really asking for a debate, but rather asking where to start.
I believe I would know how to build a script that would create such
a cloud image, and I think I can manage to get the right persons to
help, with it. But I have no idea where my build script should be
hooked, so that it is part of the release.

Is there a list for the cdimage team? I understood that it's Sledge
who works on that, no? Who else?

I believe we can expect something quite small, since on the cloud,
we want the most minimal images as possible, and that typically,
images are automatically resized before being used. The official
images for EC2, if I'm not mistaking, are 8 GB without compression,
but that is with a lot of free space left on the partition. I don't think
we will ever need more than that, and probably, about 2GB should
even be enough. What I envision is having these images follow the
point release of Debian, and built at the same time.
If we can't hook on the image CD build process (or if it is simply not
convenient to do that), then at least we should find a way so that
the cloud images are built at the same time.
We should plan for having images in multiple format if possible (and
at least provide an easy, documented way to convert them in the
missing formats). So, probably 2 or 3 format for a start, them
maybe max 5 later on. If the image size is a problem, then we can
limit ourselves to the AMI format only, with only 2GB per image, and
only 2 arch, which makes it 4GB. If it's not a problem, then we
could produce arm, and 3 format, which means maybe 20 to 30GB
of cloud images per Debian point release.
Cheers,
Thomas
P.S: It seems that you are quite interested by the cloud stuff.
I hope you'll have more time for hacking around it with everyone
else, when you're not out DPL anymore!
