Dear Cinnamon Team,

Let me start off by thanking you for all the hard work of distributing the cinnamon desktop to many happy users, including myself. I’m writing this email to inquire about the availability of the mint xapps. I’ve long wondered why the cinnamon-core package includes things like xapps-common and the xapps xdg-desktop-portal, yet the applications themselves are not distributed in any of the channels, despite all being FOSS. That’s all. Thank you for your time and I hope to hear back from you.

Kind regards,

A happy Debian user

Hi, at the moment, only xapp-symbolic-icons are planned to be added, which is a requirement for cinnamon version 6.6 and other components. Unfortunately, I'm still waiting for an upstream response regarding licensing and copyright. At the moment, trying to add it to Debian is likely to be rejected by the DFSG Team.

Regarding other software, most of which are forks, I don't have enough time to add and maintain more. Although there is an upstream deb package, it's not good enough to be added to Debian "as is." Furthermore, forks are often poorly maintained; unfortunately, the Mint team and the few contributors aren't enough. I've already seen in several cases that "original" software is better, even if it's less graphically integrated and more minimalized. If they're too minimal, other programs are better (perhaps even if they don't use GTK).

Some are specific to Mint and would require work to adapt them to Debian and derivatives (outside of packaging).

Obviously, if there was someone who wanted to work on adding and maintaining them, they could do so. Some are also completely unrelated to Cinnamon and it's fine to maintain them outside this team. At the moment, there are "Mint software" maintained outside the team there are for example: timeshift, gnome-online-accounts-gtk, slick-greeter.
