A wild guess: If you used Netscape 4.7x to download the file, it may
have uncompressed the file while retaining the original .tar.gz suffix.
Yes, an annoying bug. :-) Try to see if
$ mv mozilla-i686-pc-linux-gnu-0.8-installer.tar.gz \
mozilla-i686-pc-linux-gnu-0.8-installer.tar
$ tar -xvf mozilla-i686-pc-linux-gnu-0.8-installer.tar
works any better. :-)
