it's the cronjob. disable it as you so wish.
/etc/cron*
read manpages. you have to edit each of the cronjob's conf files.
after you disable checksecurity and updatedb, the HD will calm down,
usually.
/etc/updatedb.conf
/etc/checksecurity.conf
ps, you can use pstree to look at the processes runing
