I think that all i386 and amd64 images are being equipped with isohybrid MBR,
and will boot from optical drives (due to El Torito) and USB keys (resp. due
to MBR). All kfreebsd-i386 and kfreebsd-amd64 can do that as well, but they
don't, I have no idea why. (Imagine a Big Nag here:)

You can check the presence of isohybrid MBR by inspecting the PVD (Primary
Volume Descriptor) or TOC (Table Of Contents):

$ xorriso -indev debian-testing-amd64-netinst.iso -pvd_info
xorriso 1.2.2 : RockRidge filesystem manipulator, libburnia project.

xorriso : NOTE : ISO image bears MBR with -boot_image any partition_offset=16
...
Boot record : El Torito , ISOLINUX isohybrid MBR pointing to boot image

$ xorriso -indev debian-testing-kfreebsd-amd64-netinst.iso -pvd_info
xorriso 1.2.2 : RockRidge filesystem manipulator, libburnia project.

xorriso : NOTE : Loading ISO image tree from LBA 0
xorriso : UPDATE : 887 nodes read in 1 seconds
xorriso : NOTE : Detected El-Torito boot information which currently is set to
be discarded
