Package: debian-cd
Version: 2.2.20
Severity: normal
Hi,
As usually important kernel-images (like kernel-image-2.6-k7) are missing
at the 1rst DVD disk of the latest official Sarge DVD images (Now-06 and older),
while not useful (outdated) kernel images or kernel sources take lots of
place at the first Debian Sarge DVD:
morph@Zaidimai:/media$ du -h cdrom/pool/main/k |grep kernel |grep M
11M cdrom/pool/main/k/kernel-image-speakup-i386
4,8M cdrom/pool/main/k/kernel-image-2.4.26-i386
42M cdrom/pool/main/k/kernel-image-2.4.27-i386
3,1M cdrom/pool/main/k/kernel-image-2.6.7-i386
43M cdrom/pool/main/k/kernel-image-2.6.8-i386
4,0M cdrom/pool/main/k/kernel-source-2.4.26
40M cdrom/pool/main/k/kernel-source-2.6.6
40M cdrom/pool/main/k/kernel-source-2.6.7
About 100 MB are wasted by not useful (outdated) kernel-image and
kernel-source packages, while latest aren't fully included - for example
kernel-image-2.6.8-1-k7 and kernel-headers-2.6.8-k7 are missing :(
I think debian-cd scripts should be modified to include only one version
(with all variants - 686, k7, 586, etc.) of kernel-image-2.4.x and one of
kernel-image-2.6.x
Popularity-contest *shouldn't make impact* on kernel-image, kernel-headers,
kernel-doc or kernel-source packages, because there always will be lots
of people, who use outdated kernel packages.
Excluding/including kernel packages should be not static (like writing
concrete kernel-image or kernel-source versions in tasks/exclude-sarge
file), but intelligent, maybe with regexps or generating
tasks/included_kernels file on the fly (from the list of available
packages) in CD/DVD image making scripts. Basic rules should be the following:
1. Should *always* include all variants (at least in the 1rst DVD image
should be 686, k7, etc) of the latest kernel-image-2.6 and kernel-image-2.4)
2. Should *always* exclude older (not the latest) versions of kernel-source,
kernel-doc, kernel-patch-debian, kernel-tree, kernel-headers and
kernel-pcmcia-modules
