Bug#368178: Contents-i386.gz missing on Debian 3.1 (Sarge) CD-ROMs
Package: cdimage.debian.org
Version: N/A
Debian Release: Debian GNU/Linux 3.1
Architecture: i386
Kernel: 2.6.8-2-k7
The file Contents-i386.gz is missing on the installation DVDs/CDs for the
current Debian 3.1 release.
This doesn't affect the installation of a new Debian system, however it is
not possible to use apt-file to search through the contents of the package
database.
Example:
During the installation process or later via apt-cdrom / apt-setup
installation CDs can be added to the /etc/apt/sources.list.If apt-file is
installed and run via "apt-file update" to initialize the package
database for apt-file it will report an error message similar to the
following:
cp: cannot stat `/cdrom/dists/unstable/Contents-i386.gz': No such file or
directory
This happens because
a) the file Contents-i386.gz is missing on the CDs/DVDs
b) The entry in /etc/apt/sources.list is (incorrectly?) created with the
component entry "unstable" instead of "sarge" via apt-cdrom/ apt-setup.
Example:
deb cdrom:[Debian GNU/Linux 3.1 r0a _Sarge_ - Official i386 Binary-1
(20050607)]/ unstable contrib main
The only workaround I found for now is to remove the "deb cdrom.." entry
from /etc/apt/sources.list and to add an http/ftp installation source via
apt-setup, then to run "apt-file
update"The current testing version of Debian, Etch seems to have the same
bug, the Contents-i386.gz is missing too.
Please have a look if this can be fixed in Debian 3.1r3 and later.
Thanks and kind regards
Thorsten Schaefer
