Nightmare install continues: packages not verified

Greetings --

After booting with debian-31r0a-i386-netinst.iso I run into this during
base install -- the first package fails verification:

(The neat thing with this installer is the network console -- very nice
work.)

There's nothing about the base install in /var/log/messages, in fact the
base install generated no new messages. Lefover from the partitioning,
however, is this:

# cat /var/log/messages
insmod /lib/modules/2.6.8-2-386/kernel/drivers/ide/ide-core.ko
insmod /lib/modules/2.6.8-2-386/kernel/drivers/ide/pci/piix.ko

These errors are left after the partitioning. I've tried deleting the
partitions and recreating them, or leaving the partitions from the
previous boot and just assigning them to /boot and /root -- here's the
table:

# df
Filesystem 1k-blocks Used Available Use% Mounted on
tmpfs 102400 27944 74456 27% /

/dev/ide/host0/bus0/target0/lun0/part1 45130 13 42709 0%
/target/boot

Whatever I do I get the file descriptor error, which appears to prevent
the base-install.

Incidentally, if you define a fixed ip and then switch to network
console, selecting a Debian mirror fails. You have to use dhcp.
