I'm running 2.4.18-k7 kernel on a Woody desktop system.
Just loop mounted dvd iso, sarge-i386-1.iso and checked 
	md5sum -c md5sum.txt
which ran through 100% ok - it took a while.
So I don't think its a > 2gig issue at all.

I just googled 'more than 8 loop devices' and got 796,000
references. Most of the first 10 look to be relevant.
