Have you had a look at the Debian CD FAQ? <http://www.debian.org/CD/faq/>
As it says, if booting from the first CD doesn't work for you, try one of
the later ones.

It is impossible to make a CD which is bootable on all computers, sorry.
Even the install CDs of newer Windows versions don't work on all old
computers.

maybe you've got a friend who has some Linux experience and who can help

:-( It's difficult to say what the cause could be. One possibility is that
your laptop's CD drive (or the way it is connected to the laptop) is not
supported by Linux.
In general, installing Linux on laptops can be tricky, especially on newer
laptops. Check the "Linux on laptops" website (sorry, no URL, search for
it) to see whether your laptop is supported at all.
