Hi! You say you run potato, so you shouldn't need to boot from CD to update at all, just update your source (in dselect, with the cdrom method. But I guess you did that). sarge is the 'testing' distribution, so it may be broken, especially when updating from potato or older. If you have network access from the machine you want to update, you should update over the network and not use CDs at all. If you don't mind another big download, I suggest you get the first woody CD, update potato to woody, and then continue to sarge from there.
