pseudo-image generation doesn't work

 This looks ok:

$ ./make-pseudo-image binary-i386-1_NONUS.list ftp://ftp.uk.debian.org/debian-non-US
Generating file list...
Processing: /README.non-US
  Getting...
  Appending to pseudo-image...
  Padding...
Processing: /README.mirrors.html
  Getting...
  Appending to pseudo-image...
  Padding...
Processing: /README.mirrors.txt
[...]

 but contrary to the messages above, no pseudo-image is generated

$ ll pseudo-image
-rw-r--r--    1 local    man             0 Sep 21 14:49 pseudo-image
$ 

 At this stage, a couple of dozen packages have been downloaded. Into a
 black hole, apparently ...

 What can I do?
