This is probably because there's a lot of packages that aren't build on
powerpc.

Because it was a module until then.

That's not an option, IMO.  There's a new G4 config that includes the
NCR as the only controller, and the driver works fine for it.  Talk to
the linuxppc-dev list about this and see if someone can track it down,
I guess.  Sorry.
