Installation idiot test 2000 #1
Hi,
As debian-cd seems OK, I am working on test installs.
System Pentium MMX 233 with 64 MB RAM. I am not worried about the sound
card (Soundblaster 16) or the 3COM Etherlink card at this stage.
I got through to the device driver modules OK. lp failed, parport and
serial OK. It insisted on trying to configure a network even with the
card removed, this was worked around by ignoring "next" and using the
list. If a mock configuration of the network was made, then the
installation would work normally.
The reboot was by floppy as the partition I was using is at the far end of
a 28 GB drive.
I got caught up in an endless loop when I refused another CD, to escape
this I had to go to "cancel".
"Tasks" was not nearly as good as the slink selection.
It was at the installation stage that everything fell into a screaming
heap.
The error message (I have discovered Bic turn out a device that makes
marks of sheets of white stuff - I wonder if this is going to make
keyboards redundant?).
debconf: Perl may be unconfigured (Can't locate Getopt/Long.pm in @INC
(@INC contains perl/i386-linux /usr/local/lib/site-perl /usr/lib/perl5) at

-- aborting.
E: Write error - write (32 Broken pipe)
E: Failure running script dpkg -preconfigure --apt.
imho the boot system is basically OK, but it needs to be tidied up.
However, mother of Perl needs to get her daughter under control before the
tidying up process can realy get under way.
I had a copy of "Installing Debian GNU/Linux 2.2" (11.2.200) beside me, it
is good, but reflects quite a bit of slink and could do with an update
once the installation system is working.
Phil.
