I should have been a bit more descriptive here, sorry. GRUB outputs
"Loading kernel of FreeBSD...", then I'm returned to the screen that
says "Welcome to GRUB!", but there is no text output from kFreeBSD.
"Welcome to GRUB!" remains visible.

I'm testing inside a KVM guest (using QEMU 0.12.1.2) with emulated IDE
disk (haven't migrated onto virtio yet). I also have access to a bare
metal kFreeBSD host that I can test on, if you think that would help.

I've just thought to check what the VM is doing when this behaviour
happens, and top indicates it is using up 100% CPU time after the hang,
so it seems likely to be some kind of busyloop. I'm actually just about
to head to bed, but I can try and gather more information using strace
tomorrow.
