That flag seems to have been added in FreeBSD 8.3 / 9.0 but strangely
our tunefs is out of date.

That has not been built/packaged yet for GNU/kFreeBSD.

We don't have the FreeBSD iostat yet.  Maybe dstat does not know
how/where to find disk I/O stats on kFreeBSD.

On ZFS maybe 'zpool iostat' helps.

The rc initscript started it both times.  Once from rcS.d and again from
rc2.d - that is a known bug #700245 but the fix hasn't been accepted
into wheezy.

I thought the error message is harmless - nfsd should still be running
after that error?

And it should always be using the options from /etc/default/nfsd?
