Bug#1031620: bookworm d-i alpha 1 netinst: graphical install fails on qemu with virtio video: (EE) no screens found

Package: installation-reports
Severity: normal

This issue is already fixed in weekly builds as of 2023-02-09, but I'm
reporting it as errata for the alpha 1 milestone.

Boot method: virtual CD
Image version: debian-bookworm-DI-alpha1-amd64-netinst.iso

Machine: virt-manager "Debian testing" qemu VM presets
Partitions: none yet at the point where I encountered the error

Base System Installation Checklist:
[O] = OK, [E] = Error (please elaborate below), [ ] = didn't try it

Initial boot:           [E]
Overall install:        [ ]

Comments/Problems:

I tried doing a fresh install from bookworm d-i alpha 1 netinst media, in
a qemu VM under virt-manager installed from unstable, using virt-manager's
"Debian testing" presets:

* virtio HDD
* SATA CD-ROM with the debian-bookworm-DI-alpha1-amd64-netinst.iso image
* virtio GPU, connected to the virt-manager GUI using the Spice protocol
* virtio network card, which I connected to the network bridge created by
  libvirt-daemon-system

To reproduce
============

Full virt-manager XML suitable for passing to
`virsh define debian12-testinstall.xml` is attached (please adjust the
paths that say EDITME as required for your system), or you can use the
virt-manager GUI and select "Debian testing" as the OS to be installed:

* File -> New Virtual Machine
* Connection: QEMU/KVM User session
* Local install media
* Architecture: x86_64
* ISO or CDROM install media: debian-bookworm-DI-alpha1-amd64-netinst.iso
* Choose the OS you are installing: if automatic detection does not pick
  "Debian testing", uncheck "Automatically detect" and select
  Debian testing
* Memory and CPUs: whatever will fit on your hardware, I chose 4096M and
  3 vCPUs
* Storage: whatever you prefer, I chose to create a new 20G qcow2 image

At the netinst CD's grub prompt I selected the graphical installer.

Expected result
===============

Xorg starts and I can proceed through the graphical installer.

Actual result
=============

Xorg restarts in a loop with this message:

> Fatal server error:
> (EE) no screens found(EE)

Workaround
==========

I tried again with the text-mode installer. This started successfully. I
chose to install the Xfce desktop environment instead of the default GNOME
(to make sure I would still be using Xorg). When I booted the installed
system, the display manager (lightdm?) started successfully and I was able
to log in to an Xfce session.

Fix
===

When I used the weekly build from
https://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/weekly-builds/amd64/iso-cd/ dated
2023-02-09, the graphical installer started successfully. Presumably
the necessary modules to detect or use a virtio GPU were missing from
the alpha 1 milestone netinst image but were added to subsequent images.
