Bug# 983357: Why is it not mentioned in bullseye release notes / installation guide?

Hi,

Debian bug #983357 affects d-i when trying to run d-i in a Xen HVM
using official Debian installation media (netinst and live iso files,
for example).

The problem is catastrophic; the bug causes the Xen HVM domain to
crash and destroy itself almost immediately, thus preventing anyone
from being able to install and test Debian Bullseye in a Xen HVM using
official Debian Bullseye installation media.

Although a very simple patch to the Linux kernel has been identified
to fix #983357 many months ago, nothing has been done to fix the bug,
as evidenced by the fact that the UEVENT_BUFFER_SIZE has not been
increased to 4096 in the upstream Linux kernel sources.

That's OK, I guess. Debian can't force the Linux kernel developers to
accept a patch that fixes a problem in the Linux kernel Xen Keyboard
driver and other Linux kernel drivers that produce data that is too big
for the Linux kernel UEVENT_BUFFER_SIZE, and also fixes the crash in
the d-i.

However, this is a well-known problem, but neither the Bullseye release
notes nor the Bullseye installation guide mentions this known problem
that has not yet been fixed.

I have an account at the xenproject's wiki and I recently added a note
about this problem on their Debian-specific wiki page:

https://wiki.xenproject.org/wiki/Debian_Guest_Installation_Using_Debian_Installer#Debian_Installer

Can something be added to the Bullseye release notes and/or the
Bullseye installation guide to point users attempting to install
Bullseye in a Xen HVM domain to the workarounds that have been
identified for this problem that has not yet been fixed?

Chuck Zmudzinski
