Hello,
I must say in advance that I have no experience with Mac hardware,
but for me the part about installing xserver-xorg-video-nouveau
above doesn't fit into the picture. Xserver-xorg-video-nouveau
only contains a driver for Nvidia graphics chips, but according the
lspci output that you have pasted below there is not a single
Nvidia chip in the system, therefore just installing
xserver-xorg-video-nouveau shouldn't result in any change of
behaviour regarding the graphics support on your system. Do you by
chance remember whether installing xserver-xorg-video-nouveau has
pulled in some other packages that might have had an effect here?

For this chip xserver-xorg-video-radeon should be the correct package.
